Visionary Strategist, Serial Entrepreneur, and Investor: Harnessing Disruptive Technologies with Institutional Caliber and Over Two Decades of Expertise, from London Financial Services to Cutting-Edge Innovation, to Forge Ecosystem-Driven Value and Sustainable Growth.
Sergio Mottola is a distinguished strategist, technologist, and investor with three decades of expertise in financial services, innovation policy, and disruptive technologies. Holding a Bachelor of Arts in Business and a Master’s in Finance and Strategy, he began his career in London’s financial sector, specialising in insurance, risk management, professional indemnity, directors’ liabilities, financial institutions risks, and private equity transactions. Transitioning to academia, he pursued an Executive PhD in strategy, ecosystem strategy, and business model innovation, where his team ranked among the world’s top performers. His frameworks were adopted by major corporations, including Bosch, to manage a €3 billion innovation budget, emphasising blockchain’s potential to enable non-linear ecosystem relationships and unlock participant value.
In public administration, Sergio coordinated over 100 experts in drafting a digital transformation strategy for an Italian political party, advancing national innovation agendas. Invited by the Republic of San Marino, he established the San Marino Innovation Institute, serving as Chairman, CEO, and Director of the Scientific Committee. Under his leadership, the Institute promoted key legislations, including the pioneering "San Marino Blockchain" law, passed on June 6, 2019, as the world’s third framework for digital assets. He collaborated with international organisations such as the OECD, IMF, and MISE, as well as diplomatic representatives including the President of Albania, the US Consul General in Florence, and the Ambassador of Israel in Rome, to build strategic partnerships. Notably, he directed a committee involving global leaders like IBM, Oracle, and NTT Data, culminating in Memoranda of Understanding with DNV GL Business Assurance Group and VeChain Foundation for the Low Carbon Ecosystem Project. This initiative exemplified public-private collaboration in addressing climate change through rewarding policies, ultimately attracting over €1.8 billion in enterprise value to San Marino.
Returning to the private sector, Sergio has concentrated on strategies for blockchain adoption within the music industry, collaborating with prominent experts and entities such as independent labels and groups including Beggars Group, [PIAS] Group, Believe, and Blue Raincoat to cultivate inclusive ecosystems. His vision emphasises blockchain's capacity to safeguard intellectual property, streamline royalty distributions, and unlock novel capital streams, thereby reforming the fragmented music landscape into one characterised by transparency, equity, and inclusivity.
Central to this strategy is the advancement of intellectual property digitisation and tokenisation, transforming music IP into an accessible and liquid asset class. This aligns with the projected expansion of real-world asset tokenisation to $5 trillion by 2030, addressing historical barriers such as siloed operations, scalability limitations, and complex value chains. Sergio promotes open-source distributed ledger protocols for IP protection and efficient exploitation, alongside benefits like peer networking, educational initiatives, and business development to support stakeholders ranging from creators to investors.
His broader ventures encompass technology, renewable energy, and consumer goods, invariably emphasising consumer-centric models to drive sustainable growth.
